GA man forced to drive to ATM, robbed during dating app meetup

Police are looking for four suspects in the robbery of a Tucker man who traveled to Covington for what he thought was a date with a woman he met online.

The victim reportedly connected with the woman using the dating app BLK, which is owned by the same parent company as Tinder and is marketed toward “young millennial African Americans.” Instead of going on a date Monday night, the man was forced to hand over his debit card to three armed men, according to Covington police.

When the man arrived at the meetup address, he was confronted by the men, police spokesman Officer Justin Stott told AJC.com. The woman and the three gunmen piled into the victim’s car, and they all rode together to a Wells Fargo branch on Ga. 142, he said.

One of the gunmen allegedly used the victim’s debit card and PIN to withdraw money from his account. According to investigators, the victim tried to wrestle the man’s gun away and a gunshot was fired during the struggle.

The gunman and the victim’s would-be date left the bank in the victim’s vehicle, investigators said in a lookout.

Police on Tuesday released surveillance video of the suspect using the ATM in an effort to identify him. In the video, a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and what appears to be a bandanna around his neck walks up to the ATM alone. He finishes his transaction and pulls his hood up as he walks away.
