Cruelty and violence in the Bible

Rather a lot of it isn't there?

Undermines the claims that its god is loving and caring.

Drowning 99% of all life, killing the first born sons of Egypt etc?

Cruelty and violence.

I used to be a churchgoer.

Thing is, what I found in the bible, it's not godly.
God casting man out of the Garden of Eden, flooding the Earth, plagues, the killing of the firstborn sons of Egypt, the bet with Satan about Job, the killing of Nadab and Abihu after they offered "strange fire".

All sorts of brutality, cruelty and absurdity.

Here's another thing.
This "sin" nonsense.

If God made us, and if sin exists, God made sin.
If God exists, God is the cause of every possibility, every choice.

The idea that a poor choice would require the sacrifice of his son, would require blood to put right, when he could simply choose for things not to be a problem for him, is absurd.

It's not absurd to want to thank the cause of life, and to praise him / her / it, but it is absurd to kill in the name of a creator.

And all too many times people have.

Church membership is voluntary. To each his own

No need to express bitterness toward those who find religious solace

Criticism of the book isn't an attack on followers. I used to be one myself, leaving wasn't easy.

It's just an observation that the book is fiction.

The desire to love and praise and thank a creator for being alive is quite a different thing and is respectable.

It's just sad that in the past tyrants have tried to use god as a weapon against their fellow man. Teaching intolerance, hatred, even killing. As a result cruelty and violence found their way into the Bible.

The Holy Gospels rock.

This retired Catholic is so glad that the Good Sisters, the Jesuits, and my parents taught me the awesome Holy Gospels.
