How to repair an evap cartridge

Post by Shred » Mon Nov 20, 2023 11:06 am

The charcoal cartridge which handles fuel vapours from a petrol tank will over time get gunged up and blocked.
The purge valve solenoid will then vent fuel vapours outside the engine bay.
This is not ideal.

One fix, drill a hole in the side of the cartridge pour out the old charcoal, pour in new charcoal (the type used for filters in aquariums is ideal), cover the hole with aluminium tape or gaffer tape, refit filter and ideally change the hoses to it in case any rubber has perished.

Excellent. One of the main reasons for such a failure is trying to "top off" the tank while fueling. When the nozzle auto-stops, don't pull the trigger again.

Mine is simply worn out because it's 24 years old.

I've flushed the canister a couple of times with compressed air but it really needs the charcoal changing.
The cartridges themselves are not easy to get hold of.
The active component is simply activated charcoal pellets, they need to be big enough to not go down the pipe into the engine itself.
So this is what I'm going to do.

How did you diagnose the problem?
