1907 BSA Military Pattern air rifle .177 same rear stock, and sight picture as the Lee Enfield.
120 were built before WW1.

Idea being air rifle pellets were a lot cheaper than .303 ammunition.
At the time of design the country wasn't on a war footing, training soldiers to shoot costs a lot of money so train them with air rifles before transitioning to firearms and they get the basics of using sights.
Another thing, the real .303 Lee Enfield has quite a kick to it and has a reputation for hurting shoulders.

BSA also did a fully stocked replica of the SMLE as an air rifle, with the same sight picture as the real firearm, as a training aid for soldiers.
