I bought an ASUS with an i5 processor in it for $449 over 5 years ago still runs fine. If I were buying something today just for the internet and emails I would get a chromebook with a full HD 15 inch screen. They go for about $250 .

It's a free operating system. There are many versions of it. It is lighter than Windows, uses less resources. And it's good for older computers.

This site has lots of info:

www.distrowatch.com

if you look on YouTube, there are a lot of reviews of different versions of Linux, and also tutorials on how to install it. All you need is a flash drive.
