Fast jets

Post by Shred » Sat Nov 16, 2019 7:50 pm

This is a thread for any pictures of fast jets, any trivia you know of, anything modern or classic.

This is TSR-2, a prototype supersonic bomber of the cold war era.

It had a top speed of Mach 2.35, and had it gone into service would have been capable of delivering a 15 kt Red Beard nuclear weapon or 6 1000lb bombs.
Three prototypes were built, XR219 the only TSR-2 to fly was turned into a gunnery target and destroyed.

It was cancelled in 1965 by Harold Wilson's Labour government.
XR222 is at Duxford XR220 is at Cosford.

The government procured the F4 Phantom II and the Blackburn Buccaneer instead of TSR-2.

This is footage from inside a Buccaneer in a Red Flag exercise during the cold war.

I'm just as fascinated by US fast jets, I consider Lockheed to be one of the most interesting aircraft manufacturers in the world, they've built just about every type of powered aircraft from fighters to transports to spy planes to airliners.

Avro Vulcan XH558 at Finningley 1992, I never thought I'd see her fly again.
I had a postcard of her on my bedroom door.

Some years later, on a winch launch, in a K13 whilst I was learning to fly, XH558 passed by my airfield.
That was an awesome moment and I wish I'd had my camera.
