American Veterans deserve to be respected, they fought for the very freedoms that we enjoy today. But a Veteran in Florida found himself in a fight with his Condo Association over the oddest thing. The right to display an American Flag.
Larry Murphree is an Airforce Veteran. He was living in a condo in Sweetwater, Florida. But he had a tough time when it came to trying to show his pride for his country when he put out a 17″ American Flag in a flowerpot. The Tides Condominium Association decided to fine him $100 a day when he refused to take the American Flag down.
“I lost it,” Murphree said about the letter he received from the association seven years ago, according to the Post. “It just dawned on me there’s people that strap on a gun every day to protect me and the people I love. It’s a small flag, but it stands for a big thank you.”
This was an ongoing battle, Murphree won the first battle by citing The Freedom To Display The American Act, which prevents HOA’s from stopping people from displaying the American Flag. But after the HOA lost the first battle and were forced to pay Murphree’s court fees and fines back, they devised a new plan. The new plan involved a new regulation on plant displays and how a flag was not allowed in them. Murphree of course protested and refused to remove the flag. But this time was different, as he had some health issues that prevented him from keeping up with the conniving Condo Association (CA).
While Murphree was recovering from neck surgery he was medicated and did not notice that the CA was using his monthly CA dues to pay his fines, thereby causing his dues to pile up.
Watch An Older News Reel About The Dispute.
“He sold his home in the wake of mounting fees and a lien placed on it by the condominium association. Foreclosure was imminent, he said, and the ordeal had soured his desire to live in the community. Still, his stand has been costly and he was recently granted a court date for a trial, where he’ll try to recoup his lost money. He’s suing for $1 million.
“He’s probably lost . . . hundreds of thousands of dollars of his retirement money, not to mention the time he’ll never get back from having to fight this battle,” his attorney, Gust Sarris, told The Washington Post.”
Hopefully, he wins this case as The Tides Condo Association has shown to be quite despicable. This was a modest display and completely uncalled for. They should be punished for their disrespectful actions and taking advantage of a sick veteran.
