Ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to Join Donald Trump’s Personal Legal Team
Giuliani expected to join team immediately
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, said Thursday he will join the president’s private legal team representing him in the Russia investigation.
The addition of Mr. Giuliani was confirmed by Jay Sekulow, currently the primary lawyer on the team. He took over as lead attorney after John Dowd, resigned last month.
“Rudy is great,” Mr. Trump said in a statement provided by Mr. Sekulow. “He has been my friend for a long time and wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country.”
Mr. Giuliani said in a statement that it was an “honor to be a part of such an important legal team.”
Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether Trump associates colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election and possibly engaged in obstruction of justice. Mr. Trump has denied the charges and has pushed for the conclusion of the probe, which he has termed a “witch hunt.” Russia has denied election meddling.
Mr. Giuliani has close ties to the president. He was a top supporter of Mr. Trump during the campaign, and the former mayor’s name was floated as a possible attorney general nominee. He wasn’t tapped to serve in the administration.
Mr. Sekulow also said attorneys Jane Raskin and Marty Raskin would also join the team, calling them “highly respected former federal prosecutors” with a “reputation for excellence and integrity.”
The legal team has experienced some reshuffling in recent weeks. Mr. Dowd quit last month partly because of the president’s decision to hire a new attorney, Joe DiGenova. The following week, Mr. Trump opted not to add Mr. DiGenova to his team, in part out of concern about possible conflicts posed by Mr. DiGenova’s firm’s representation of other witnesses in the Russia probe.
