Passengers praised the skill of Tammie Jo Shults in landing the plane after it lost an engine.

Reuters - Andrew Hay

(Reuters) - The pilot who safely landed a stricken Southwest Airlines flight on Tuesday got her first flying experience in the U.S. Navy, touching down F-18 fighter jets at 150 miles per hour on aircraft carriers.

Tammie Jo Shults, 56, may have drawn on her Navy skills when one of the two engines on her Boeing 737-700 blew and broke apart at 32,000 feet on Tuesday, forcing her to implement a rapid descent toward Philadelphia International Airport.

The explosion killed one passenger.

One of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy, Shults calmly told air traffic control that part of her plane was missing, and she would need ambulances on the runway.

“So we have a part of the aircraft missing so we’re going to need to slow down a bit,” Shults told a controller.

Many of the 144 passengers sang her praise on social media after Shults thanked them for their bravery as they left the plane.

“The pilot Tammy Jo was so amazing! She landed us safely in Philly,” said Amanda Bourman on Instagram.

It's a good thing we were able to beat the conservative resistance to letting women serve and serve as pilots.
hopefully, she was / is being paid the same as her male counterparts, rather than the way the liberal, Hillary Clinton paid her male staffers much more than female staffers.

we're all the same. it shouldn't matter what its gender is

Really, did you serve azzhole? What did she do special? How about the 1st officer of the aircraft???? She did what ANY pilot would have done, moron. POS liberal f#ck. Imagine her landing that on water like "Sully" did.

How much has sexual harassment cost the DoD???? If she got pregnant, she could get out and the taxpayers could kiss the million to train her goodbye, too much for a mental reject from Mishitgan could process.
► Why the attack on the pilot?
Bitter, frustrated attacks on his betters is what BDS does: he hates all successful people equally.
I'm attacking evil, ly'in of the dork. And evil started with the "conservative resistance" crap. So get a clue.
You also attacked the pilot. If she had let the plane crash and kill everyone you would be all over it calling her a Liberal and crap like that.
how did I attack the pilot? And how come the first officer doesn't get any credit? This is nothing but a PR stunt from the left, an idiot liberals like Evil commie shooting his mouth off. Next thing you know they're going to glorify a transgender pilot.
You would be all over it if the plane had crashed and killed everyone. You would be calling her a Liberal or what ever else comes out of your sick head.
You're a damn liar. REAL veterans aren't liberals.

Indeed..........I'm sure the 144 passengers on that airliner are quite glad that the reactionaries in our country failed to keep that female patriot out of the military.

Good for Ms Shults.

Amazing. You're attacking an American hero, who's also a woman. AND, she's still eligible to be called up for service. I remember my high school biology course. How do you expect a 56 year old woman to get preggers?

More to the point, the US already got more than a few million in return for her training.
