A woman’s decision to snatch a fellow college student’s hat could land her behind bars for as long as a year.

According to Fox News, University of California at Riverside student Edith Macias is facing a misdemeanor petty theft charge stemming from the September incident.

Fellow student Matthew Vitale recorded the aftermath of the alleged theft, which shows Macias taking the “Make America Great Again” hat to college staff and unleashing a profane rant.

She claimed the hat, which emerged during the 2016 election cycle as the most recognizable symbol of support for President Donald Trump, is a symbol of hatred.

“This represents genocide, genocide of a bunch of people,” she said.

Macias, described by Breitbart as an ethnic studies major, went on to insist that Vitale face some form of punishment for wearing the politically charged hat in public.

Though the staff ultimately returned his property, Vitale said he was not convinced the college treated the incident as an actual crime even after Macias uploaded her own video reportedly revealing the moment she took the hat from his head.

Specifically, he lamented what he thought was an anemic statement from Chancellor Kim Wilcox on the matter.

As The College Fix reported at the time, Wilcox cited the values of “dedication to mutual respect” and “commitment to free speech” in a statement Vitale said did not go far enough to condemn Macias’ act.

“I get the feeling that the school didn’t take it very seriously,” he said.

The prospect of a criminal conviction in the case, however, gives Vitale something to celebrate.

Fox News cited a source at the district attorney’s office who said Macias could spend up to a year in county jail if found guilty of the offense. She is scheduled to appear in court early next year.

“I’m very excited that the DA’s office took it seriously,” Vitale said.

He also praised the response of campus police in handling his complaint.

According to Vitale, his concern was never about a hat.

Shortly after the incident, he told Fox News that he is “just trying to say, ‘Look, behavior like this is not tolerated in this country.'”
