Marathon pastor accused of sexually battering 15-year-old girl at church
MARATHON, Fla. – Deputies arrested a South Florida pastor Monday morning after they accused him of sexually battering an intoxicated 15-year-old girl at his church.
Monte Lavelle Chitty, 62, of Marathon, is facing charges of sexual battery of a minor, lewd and lascivious conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
He is the pastor of First Baptist Marathon, located at 200 62nd St., where he was arrested just before 6:15 Monday morning, according to jail records.
In a news release, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Becky Herrin said deputies were informed of what happened after an anonymous caller reported overhearing a girl telling an adult that she had been raped. Herrin said the girl and her grandmother had boarded a dinghy and headed out to the harbor.

The former Maryville Apostolic Christian Academy middle school teacher accused of sexual abuse by an authority figure has agreed to plead guilty, Knox News has learned.
Joseph “Kade” Abbot was charged in 2023 with three counts of sexual assault by an authority figure against a 14-year-old girl. He will plead guilty to all three counts, according to his attorney, Jonathan Cooper. Charges involving the same girl were filed in both Blount and Sevier counties and were consolidated in Blount County, where Abbott will be sentenced.
